Garmin Train

It was the 2nd time I’ve seen the Giro. Back in 2008 I drove halfway across Italy with Jake Wetzel to watch a sprint finish.  This year they were kind enough to come right past our hotel.

I was excited to see a fellow Canadian Ryder Hesjedal in the Pink. My brother used to race against Ryder and I’m sure he remembers me as “Alistair’s little brother”.  I had hoped to get a good photo of Ryder but he was back in the middle of the Peleton and not with the Garmin train in front. (in the photo below you can just see Ryder far right at the back in the pink helmet)

Taking photos of the Giro was cool. I got myself in a good position right on the front of a roundabout. From there it was easy to catch the action. Whatever action there was, 40km into a 169km mountain top finish stage.

The past few days the weather has been amazing in Portugal. It is nice to get some natural Vitamin D. I don’t want to go back to the rain! Thankfully the forecast is looking a little better now.

Which of course is way better than Norway (apparently there is a meter of ice on the lake at the Norwegian Training Centre)

I did my best to capture a sunny day here – not the greatest panorama, but I wanted to show how there are no clouds, just sun and blue sky.

Really this picture sums it up:

The weather was not always perfect, I thought I was going to sink one day, but most important, the training has been awesome.

Looking forward to finishing it off tomorrow with the Head of the Cork 6km race.

First six days of training in Portugal all on one map – you can also check out the lake on google maps.

The lake is amazing – You can go in three directions from the dock, either 12, 13 or 10 km each way. In most places it is around 6 lanes wide. There is a good mix of wind and nice water.

No Ogopogo so far, but plenty of Storks.

It is different to be in Europe without the rest of the team. The single is a lonely event, but even more so when you are the only Canadian at the World Cup. I would be totally lost without Allison.

The German signature collectors kept asking if I was the only Canadian and “Where is Terry Paul?”, they still want his autograph from the 92 Olympics!

I owe a big thanks to Norway for letting me be an unofficial teammate, also to Andreas for arranging a boat bay for my single.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the team on Tuesday, maybe they can bring me some clean socks???
